"In the last few years with works like Werewolf by Night, Teen Wolf, Nimona, Turning Red, and more works featuring human to animal transformation has taken off. Is this a narrative trope? Genre? Join us as we look into the long history of this lesser documented type of story. From our shared cultural heritage with shapeshifting shamans, mythology and fables featuring humans turned into animals, the domination of werewolves in the horror genre, henshin and magical girls in Japan to the domination of of the transformation webcomic genre, join us for a detailed look at the shapeshifting in fiction. Our panel is divided into two halves, the first cover our earliest lore and stories and look at shapeshifters from around the world including the kitsune, tikbalangs, nagual, werehyenas, tanuki, and of course werewolves. The second half covers modern media, from the earliest werewolf movies and novels to Silver Age comics and manga to works like Shaggy Dog, Rama ½, KO Beast, Animorphs, Ben 10, American Dragon, Glass Scientists, Turning Red, Luca, Nimona, Beast Boy, Teen Wolf, and many many other works with have “transformed” this narrative trope in countless ways across all media.
