While these examples are fairly obvious, others can be more difficult to spot and to avoid. Transformation - From Folklore to Fables to Modern Fiction
Friday May 9, 2025 7:30pm - 8:30pm EDT
"In the last few years with works like Werewolf by Night, Teen Wolf, Nimona, Turning Red, and more works featuring human to animal transformation has taken off. Is this a narrative trope? Genre? Join us as we look into the long history of this lesser documented type of story. From our shared cultural heritage with shapeshifting shamans, mythology and fables featuring humans turned into animals, the domination of werewolves in the horror genre, henshin and magical girls in Japan to the domination of of the transformation webcomic genre, join us for a detailed look at the shapeshifting in fiction. Our panel is divided into two halves, the first cover our earliest lore and stories and look at shapeshifters from around the world including the kitsune, tikbalangs, nagual, werehyenas, tanuki, and of course werewolves. The second half covers modern media, from the earliest werewolf movies and novels to Silver Age comics and manga to works like Shaggy Dog, Rama ½, KO Beast, Animorphs, Ben 10, American Dragon, Glass Scientists, Turning Red, Luca, Nimona, Beast Boy, Teen Wolf, and many many other works with have “transformed” this narrative trope in countless ways across all media.

Pup Play Psychology: The Why behind the Woof
Friday May 9, 2025 9:30pm - 10:30pm EDT
Nearly every con that offers AD or 18+ panels has had some kind of pet or pup event: they’re typically meet-and-greets, or how-to guides for common practices designed for an audience of all experiences.

We’d like to do something else entirely. In this panel, we hope to investigate the psychological and sociological phenomena which make pup play fun, and which make it such an emotionally important part of many of our lives.

Both presenters are published researchers and have an appetite for the academic. The body of research which can help explain the mechanics of pup play is surprisingly large—spanning from B.F. Skinner's groundbreaking 1963 paper on operant conditioning, to Darren Langdridge and Jamie Lawson’s 2019 phenomenological investigation of pup play. Combining contemporary human- and animal-behavioral research with our own experiences, case studies, and interviews, we hope to illuminate not just how pup play is done, but why it's so appealing: making the science accessible to a wide audience of practitioners who might not know exactly what goes on under the hood.
